Zoi Gaitanidou is using embroidery to create elaborate tapestries that combine figures and abstract patterns with an intensity that recalls tribal art. Her imagery is reminiscent of a naïve derivative of neo-Expressionism that also evokes a contemporary take on the tropical vision of Henri Rousseau (Roberta Smith). Every detail is sewn with a free form embroidery that recalls brushstrokes while the spiderweb networks in her work resemble drawings, revealing the artist’s background in painting in which she was originally trained at. The result is chaotic and wild calling for a closer inspection upon which the labor intensity of the work is revealed.
