The Breeder participates in Condo London, hosted by The Approach Gallery, presenting the work of Vanessa Safavi.
Safavi’s latest research based artworks remain deeply embedded in the symbolic while being presented in minimal forms, where the accidental properties and ephemeral nature of the objects can shine through. The themes encountered revolve around identity and alienation, and specifically the fragmenting incidents in the preconditioned and fragile mind-body relationship in female subjects.
She creates a subtle system where each color and material hold social and cultural meaning. The way she distributes her color palette creates a space for the encounter and correlation of her artworks. With her use of skin-like silicone she creates fleshy surfaces referencing the various performances of the body, its hypersexualisation and objectification, and reminds us the ubiquitous connotation of skin and identity.
Her work is a result of researching various societal conventions regarding the oppression of women and the objectification of female bodies, providing a wide historical scope for examining the female experience.
