Amalia Melancholia
January 13, 2024–March 2, 2024The Breeder Studyroom, Athens
The Breeder Studyroom is a new initiative, an allocated space inside the gallery building, where each respective artist sets up a studyroom to share part of their creative process with the audience of the gallery. First studyroom resident was Chioma Ebinama, during her solo exhibition at the gallery, in May 2023 and during the summer Andreas Angelidakis presented his project titled The Rubble Chute Order. Chrysanne Stathacos took over the space next building a narrative that shed light to her creative process diachronically, including historical works, performance remains and publications.
For the first time, The Breeder Studyroom will be dedicated to a theatrical play and will be transformed to a room filled with the references and research material behind the performance Amalia melancholia, the queen of the palm trees which is on view at the Theatre Odou Kykladon – Lefteris Vogiatzis. The director of the play, Zoe Chatziantoniou, shares the material and elements of her process which led her to conceive and develop the play. The work discloses hidden parts of queen Amalia, a figure between reality and fiction, and her creation, the National Garden, which replaced in many ways her unborn child. The play is full of historical, political and social references and the set-up of The Breeder Studyroom aims to shed light on the content and context of the play enriching its narrative with elements never seen before and to also bring together the theatrical and the visual world. Aristeidis Lappas was invited to work with those references and will present new commissioned work in dialogue with the play and its specific artistic components.
We would like to thank for their contribution to the realisation of The Breeder Studyroom installation the following: Stavros Gasparatos (Music), Pantelis Makkas (Video), Konstadina Angeletou (Production Manager), Kyriaki Mavrogeorgi (Artworks), Alexandra Delitheou (short making of video on ipad) and G.
