Army of Scarecrows is a sculptural installation by Andreas Lolis composed of three monumental, life-sized scarecrows carved entirely from marble, including Dionysos White Marble, Portuguese pink, Edessa black, and Moroccan brown marble. Assembled from hand-carved elements resembling worn garments, wood, and discarded materials, the figures evoke the improvised construction of rural scarecrows. By translating fragile, temporary forms into enduring stone, Lolis unsettles marble’s traditional association with permanence and heroism. Conceived as free-standing sculptures, the figures are encountered in open space, where accidental meetings with viewers transform them into quiet monuments to labor, vulne- rability, and everyday human presence.
Andreas Lolis (born 1970 in Gjirokastër, Albania) is a sculptor who transforms marble into meticulously carved replicas of everyday materials and objects, exploring memory, labor, and the fragile monumentality of ordinary life. Lolis lives and works in Athens.
