The Breeder
Artists for Athens Pride II

February 6, 2010–February 6, 2010
The Breeder, Athens

The Breeder is delighted to invite you to the second annual exhibition and auction of contemporary artwork, the entire proceeds of which will go to support Athens Pride 2010. More info about the 2009 auction available at www.athenspride.eu/afap/.

This year, the 22 artists who have generously donated important works include foreign artists, Greek artists living and working abroad, as well as some of the most prominent artists on the Greek scene. They represent a range of career stages, from veteran and mid-career artists to rising stars, which all are internationally recognized through solo shows and major events such as the Athens Biennial, the Venice Biennale and the Bienal de Sao Paulo, and have works in important collections worldwide. Their practices cover every contemporary form: painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, video-animation, collage, silkscreen and digital printing.

An excellent contemporary art survey in and of itself, Artists for Athens Pride II offers art lovers and collectors a unique opportunity to acquire superior quality artworks at extraordinary prices while supporting the philanthropic project of Athens Pride.

About Athens Pride:
Athens Pride (www.athenspride.eu) is a registered non-profit association, founded in 2006 after the success of its first Pride festival on 25 June 2005. This year’s 6th festival takes place on 5 June in Klafthmonos Square, with a parade through the historic center of Athens. Similar Pride Festivals are held throughout the world to commemorate the uprising at the Stonewall Inn in New York on 28 June 1969, when for the first time gays, lesbians and transsexuals violently reacted to what was then routine and gratuitous harassment.
In addition to its main festival, Athens Pride holds various events throughout the year to promote the positive visibility and acceptance of LGBT persons, to combat prejudice and silence, and to advocate for fundamental rights. Athens Pride is an all-volunteer organization that relies solely on pro bono services, private sponsorship and personal donations. Its operating costs are escalating in direct proportion to its increasing attendance and the expectations of all involved.

About the curator:
Andrea Gilbert is a New York-born art critic and curator living and working in Athens since 1989. She has curated major international group exhibitions (SKIN, Deste Foundation; Magic, vamiali’s gallery) and numerous solo shows. In 2008 she organized Istoria mou, amartia mou…: A Visual History of Queer Life in Greece at Spilioti Projects. In 2009 she curated the first Artists for Athens Pride at The Breeder. Her articles appear in exhibition catalogues, the foreign press, and in her column in the Greek paper City Uncovered.
In tandem to her art career, Ms. Gilbert is an LGBT activist and Greek Helsinki Monitor specialist on anti-Semitism. She has been involved in the Athens Pride organization since its inception in 2005, and has been a principal organizer since 2006. She is also serves on the Board of InterPride, the International Association of Pride Organizers.
