Weavings: Painting and tapestry in Greece from 1960 to the present
November 22, 2019–March 1, 2020Benaki Museum, Athens
Painting meets tapestry in the exhibition, creating a parallel perspective on paintings by Greek artists and the respective tapestry and hand tufted rugs produced over different periods of time.
The works on display feature paintings from the 1960s that were turned into tapestry by Ioannis Faitakis, works from the 1970s turned into handmade rugs upon the initiative of the Nees Morfes Gallery, as well as textiles produced by Greek artists who worked in France and the United Kingdom.
Τhe exhibition also includes works by contemporary artists from 1980 to the present, such as Zoi Gaitanidou, where the process of weaving craftmanship has resulted in prominent Fiber Art constructions.
