Socratis Socratous, Untitled, 2003-2004, inkjet print, 40×30 cm, edition of 20.
Shot in 2003-2004, when Socratis Socratous was the official photographer of the 2004 Olympic Games of Athens, the work captures an intimate fleeting moment during training.
Socratous documents the rehearsals for the opening and closing ceremonies along with the athletes through all different sports in their daily routines leading up to the biggest sporting even in the world. It is a peculiar kind of diary, updated daily by the artist, who documents faces, situations and locations, uncritically allowing them to bare their truth. Works by Socratis Socratous (b. in Paphos, Cyprus, 1971) are included in the Collection of Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Belvedere Museum, Vienna; the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art; the State Collection of Cypriot Contemporary Art.
