Angelo Plessas
The Breeder at Condo São Paulo 2020
February 1, 2020–March 21, 2020Opening:
Sé Galeria, São Paulo
The Breeder is pleased to participate in Condo São Paulo 2020, hosted by Sé Galeria, showing the work of Angelo Plessas.
Angelo Plessas makes work for the current time of the internet. For Plessas, the Internet is an ambivalent force and his work acts accordingly as both a talisman to ward off the malign aspects of technology in the service of capitalism, and as an invitation to celebrate its potential to build a new kind of networked spirituality. Recognising the internet as something that spills into everyday reality, he pushes his practice back and forwards across digital and analogue territories in order to consider changing boundaries and definitions for subjects including considerations of gender and labour.
His Noospheric Quilts are part of a broader project called The Noospheric Society which started as part of Documenta 14 Public Programs. The Noospheric Society reflects on spiritual sides of technology, merging concepts of the biosphere and cybersphere with the intention to touch upon issues of freedom, social relations and environmental energies. The quilts are made from materials that can block electromagnetic signals and they bear symbols that are talismans protecting from the technological evil eye and helping this co-existence of technological and natural world.
Angelo Plessas has presented his work in a number of exhibitions, which among others include: “Minds Rising, Spirits Tuning”, Gwangju Biennale (upcoming 2020), “The Extended Mind”, Talbot Rice Gallery, Edinburg (2019); Karma Mechanics, solo at The Breeder, Athens (2018); “I was raised on the Internet“, MCA Chicago (2018); Documenta 14, Athens and Kassel, curated by Adam Szymczyk (2017); “Instructions for Happiness”, curated by Severin Dünser and Olympia Tzortzi, 21er Haus Vienna (2017); “Collectivisms”, Foam, Amsterdam (2107); “Si Sedes Non Is”, curated by Milovan Farronato, The Breeder, Athens (2017); ‘DESTE Prize: An Anniversary Exhibition 1999- 2015”, Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens (2017); “ARS 17, Hello World!”, invited by Attilia Fattori Franchini, Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki; (2017); “Extropic Optimisms”, The Breeder Skin, Athens (2016); “Narcissus Now”, Onassis Cultural Center, New York (2015); “Ethereal Sunrise”, special commission for the Onassis Foundation Cultural Center, Athens (2015); “Deste Prize 2015”, Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens (2015); “Mirage Machines”, solo exhibition at The Breeder, Athens, (2015); “Supersuperstudio”, PAC Milano curated by Andreas Angelidakis, Vittorio Pizzigoni and Valter Scelsi, (2015); “Food” curated by Adelina von Furstenberg in MuCEM, Marseille (2014); “Scenes d’ Europe” curated by Florence Derieux and Antoine Marchand, Frac Champagne- Ardenne (2013); “A Rock and a hard place”, 3rd Thessaloniki Biennale, curated by Paolo Colombo, Mahita Ebu and Marina Fokidis (2011); “The Angelo Foundation School of Music”, curated by Stamatis Schizakis at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (2011); “Splendid Isolation”, 3rd Athens Biennale, curated by Cay Sophie Rabinowitz (2009); The Angelo Foundation Headquarters (with Andreas Angelidakis), curated by Maria Ines Rodriguez, Jeu De Paume, Paris (2009); “In Present Tense”, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (2007).
