YOYI! Care, Repair, Heal
September 16, 2022–January 15, 2023Gropius Bau, Berlin
YOYI is the name of a ceremonial gathering of song and dance central to Tiwi culture in northern Australia. YOYI! Care, Repair, Heal refers to this exclamation: an invitation to come together to celebrate and mourn together.
In response to this call, each of the 26 invited artists pursues different strategies to question, reinvent, expand, sustain or break away from the notions of caring, repairing and healing. Some offer critical perspectives on how the concept of care has been abused. Others propose methods of repair that are fundamentally different from Western approaches. Still others ask whether healing is possible or even necessary. The spectrum of these voices is reflected in video works, installations, paintings and performances that are shown throughout the ground floor of the Gropius Bau.
