Dimitris Gketsis
The Fault in our Stars
November 10, 2022–December 23, 2022The Breeder Feeder, Athens
The Breeder is pleased to present The Fault in our Stars, Dimitris Gketsis’ new solo exhibition at The Breeder Feeder, presenting a series of his signature style wall reliefs. Gketsis’ new resin sculptures are reminiscent of marble reliefs that decorated monuments in Ancient Rome and Greece fusing classical vocabulary with a contemporary sensibility. His works are populated by female figures, hybrid entities and animals. He uses mythology as a source material for his investigation of how the social context of the post-colonial and patriarchal environment has shaped our current time.
In contrast to the dominant representation of the ideal of the white, male Man of Reason that we see in classical art, Gketsis responds with a cyborgian vision of hybrid, manifold beings proposing new hierarchies and subjectivities. In his works the boundaries between stereotypical definitions of male and female, black or white, human or animal merge.
His protagonists elude the strictures of a fixed, coherent identity; they propose a self, set free, filled with possibilities. His critique of existing societal norms and his proposition of new politics of identity is presented here with satire and humor. His sculptures inspired by antiquity adopt contemporary references drawn from pop Greek culture to fashion and music. Works like Woman Warrior and Social Visibility draw equally from the latest Balenciaga campaigns and the famous Schiaparelli corset while at the same time embracing hybrid androgynous representations of the female figure.
