Solo exhibition

The Breeder is pleased to present Andreas Lolis’ new solo exhibition, a project which is based on his long- term investigation and thorough research on the behavior and capabilities of marble. The exhibition consists of a new body of ten canvases which blur the boundaries between sculpture and painting and energize space in unpredictable ways.
Lolis presents us here with marble delicately carved in the size of a traditional canvas, positioned both on the walls and floor of the gallery, in an attempt to test the limitations of traditional sculpture while simultaneously challenging assumptions of what painting could be expanding the concept of a painting beyond its frame or surface. Questioning the traditional understanding of sculpture as grounded, static, and dense, Lolis pierces here the marble creating a void which reveals unseen spatial regions and expands the experience of space. As if creating a fictional dialogue between Henry Moore and Lucio Fontana’s famous Tagli (Cut) series, Lolis’ piercing on the marble extends its surface outward in space while also opening up the space beyond.
These holes and cuts provide an opportunity for the unseen parts of the work to come to the fore and carry meaning. For the artist, this void stands as a metaphor of a faded memory, of blurred mental images of people that are no longer part of his life. Uniting all of Lolis works, however, is a dependence on the viewer’s perception of their many elements to achieve their full expression. With the cut, he opens his canvases to myriad interpretive possibilities, inviting the viewer to complete an exercise in perception begun by the artist himself.
Andreas Lolis (1970) lives and work in Athens, Greece. He is a graduate of the Athens School of Fine Arts (2002) and the Carrara Academy of Fine Arts (2005). He has taought at the Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts (2016-2018).

He has collaborated for projects and exhibitions with the following curators: Ralph Rugoff (Director of The Hayward Gallery, London), Nicolas Bourriaud (Director of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux- Arts, Paris), Shamim Momin (Director and Curator at LAND, Los Angeles, co- curator of the 2004 and 2008 Whitney Biennale), Claire Lilly (director of Yorkshire Sculpture Park), Tom Eccles (Executive Director of the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College), Xenia Kalpaktsoglou (curator and co- founder of the Athens Biennial), Katerina Koskina (director of the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens 2008-2018).

Lolis has presented his works in solo exhibitions: “Behind the Theatre”, curated by Christoforos Marinos, produced by Eleusis 2023 European Capital of Culture and co-organized with Aeschylia Festival; ”Prosaic Origins”, British School at Athens, curated by Nayia Yiakoumaki, NEON City Project, Athens; “Undercurrents” at The Breeder in Athens; at The Breeder Monaco in Monte Carlo; at Mϋnchner Kϋnstlerhaus and at Chiesa del Suffragio, Carrara.
