Chrysanne Stathacos
The Breeder Studyroom
November 9, 2023–December 23, 2023The Breeder, Athens
The Breeder Studyroom is a new initiative, an allocated space inside the gallery building, where each respective artist sets up a studyroom to share part of their creative process with the audience of the gallery. First studyroom resident was Chioma Ebinama, during her solo exhibition at the gallery, in May 2023 and during the summer Andreas Angelidakis presented his project titled The Rubble Chute Order.
This time Chrysanne Stathacos takes over the space building a narrative that sheds light to her creative process diachronically, includes historical works, performance remains, references and sources of inspiration.
Chrysanne Stathacos was a fixture of the New York scene for over 30 years before she moved her studio to Greece and Canada. She brings together printmaking, photography, video and installation, often creating participatory public art projects. Stathacos’ painting spans multiple continents and contexts and incorporates universal motifs and materials such as roses, hair, condoms and ivy. The materials are coated in etching ink and arranged on linen before being sent through a printing press. The impression is a shadow, a record of presence, where natural colors oxidize with time to create a fragile palimpsest. Inspiration comes from personal experience as during the HIV/AIDS pandemic, she lost close friends. Her work grapples with collective loss, body politics and metaphysical spirituality that erupts into performance, installation, and interactive environment. Influenced by feminism, Greek Mythology, eastern spirituality and Buddhism, recent solo exhibitions include: anonymous gallery, New York; The Buffalo Institute of Art; The Breeder, Athens. She presented at the 13th Gwangju Biennial and institutions such as Henie Onstad, Norway; and alongside AA Bronson at Kunstinstituut Melly, Rotterdam. She has recently been featured in Artforum, Frieze and more.
