The Breeder is pleased to participate in Condo London with Not Allowed for Algorithmic Audiences, a project by Kyriaki Goni, hosted at Public Gallery.
Each day, around 3.7 million new videos are uploaded to YouTube alone. Human body sounds from these videos are collected, labeled, and used to build audio datasets that train algorithms. As voice UIs become more common, voice assistant usage grows across age groups. In a hot August in Athens, a fictional virtual assistant named “Voice” emerges on screen each day at 5:30 p.m. Over seven days, this AI—facing its impending end in an ewaste dump—shares playful advice on evading online surveillance. Reflecting on philosopher Rosi Braidotti’s idea of voice as a “soul’s audio footprint,” Voice raises questions about privacy, identity, and surveillance.
For the past decade, Kyriaki Goni has used diverse media to explore the political, emotional, and environmental impacts of big tech, focusing on themes like extractivism, surveillance, and alternative networks centered on care and community. Her installations span websites, textiles, ceramics, drawings, videos, sound, and text, creating interconnected ecosystems that blend the local with the global and the fictional with the scientific. Recent solo shows include: The Breeder Gallery, Athens; Blenheim Walk Gallery, Leeds; SixtyEight Art Institute, Copenhagen; KVOST Berlin; Onassis Stegi, Athens; Drugo More, Rijeka; Aksioma, Ljubljana. Group exhibitions include Love is Louder, Bozar, Brussels, Attention After Technology at Kunsthall Trondheim, 1.5 Degrees Kunsthalle Mannheim, Modern Love, National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens EMST, 2nd Warsaw Biennale, 8th Gherdeina Biennale, Ars Electronica, 13th Shanghai Biennale, 5th Istanbul Design Biennial etc. Prizes and fellowships include: S+T+Arts 2023 Nomination, Ducato Prize2023 nomination, The New New Allianz Kulturstiftung and Bertelmanns Stiftung, the INSPIRE 2020 MOMUS Greece, ARTWORKS2018 Stavros Niarchos Foundation. Condo takes its name from ‘condominium’ and is a large-scale collaborative exhibition of international galleries. Host galleries share their spaces with visiting galleries – either by co-curating an exhibition together, or dividing their galleries and allocating spaces. The initiative encourages the evaluation of existing models, pooling resources and acting communally to propose an environment that is more conducive for experimental gallery exhibitions to take place internationally.
