Luke Edward Hall
I Walk Over the Mountains and the Waves
August 22, 2024–August 30, 2024Old School of Chora, Patmos Island
Then I arise, and climbing Heaven’s blue dome,
I walk over the mountains and the waves,
Leaving my robe upon the ocean foam;
My footsteps pave the clouds with fire; the caves
Are filled with my bright presence, and the air
Leaves the green earth to my embraces bare.
Percy Bysshe Shelley, Hymn of Apollo, 1824 (excerpt)
The Breeder presents the solo exhibition “I Walk Over the Mountains and the Waves” by British artist and designer Luke Edward Hall, taking place at the Old School of Chora in Patmos.
Inspired by the enchanting island life, Hall’s new series of drawings captures the mystical energy that seduces its visitors. The show’s title pays homage to the “Hymn of Apollo” by the eminent Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, reflecting the deep connection between art, nature, and spirituality.
Hall’s work is profoundly influenced by the nature and history of Patmos. He weaves together storytelling elements by collecting memories, scents, and moments from the place, presenting them through vivid portraits and landscapes. The local context breathes life into his art, where the magic of everyday scenes — from fields and mountains to the sea and its creatures — is brought to life with an eroticism and lyrical tone that is unmistakably his.
Patmos, known as one of the most spiritual islands and the site where Apostle John received the visions of the Apocalypse, provides a rich tapestry for Hall’s exploration of religious themes. His works feature saints and archangels alongside mythical figures and ordinary people — bathers, vacationers, and fishermen — drawn from the island’s heritage. This interplay of the sacred and the quotidian creates an aura that transcends individual artworks, offering a continuous narrative that is both nostalgic and contemporary.
Hall’s distinct style is eclectic, passionate, and poetic. His work is personal yet universal, speaking directly to the hearts of his audience. By blending mythology and folklore, Hall crafts an atmosphere that feels both real and imaginary. His use of warm colors and spontaneous, dynamic compositions exude charm and a sense of carefreeness reminiscent of a Greek summer. “I Walk Over the Mountains and the Waves” is not only an exhibition; it is a celebration of life.
Luke Edward Hall works across a broad range of interests, blurring the boundary between art and design. His projects include interior design, fashion, murals, and illustration work for books, restaurants, and hotels. He has collaborated with diverse brands and institutions, including Burberry, Lanvin, Christie’s, the Royal Academy of Arts, the V&A, Ginori 1735, Svenskt Tenn, and Habitat. In 2020, Hall completed his first major interior design and art direction project with the opening of Hôtel Les Deux Gares in Paris. The previous year, he joined the Financial Times as a columnist for FT Weekend. In 2022, Hall launched his own brand, Chateau Orlando, which features homewares and clothing. He is also the author of three books, published by teNeues, Vendome, and Penguin. He has held solo exhibitions at The Breeder in Athens (2021, 2022, 2023) and London (Frieze No.9 Cork Street, 2023), and at Daniel Cooney Fine Art in New York (2023).
