The Breeder
Zut! Paris
October 18, 2022–October 23, 202272 rue de l’Université, 75007, Paris
Zut! is a collaborative exhibition which celebrates the intersection of art and design. Occupying an 18th century mansion on 72 rue de l’Université in the 7th arrondissement, this immersive exhibition is the brainchild of 7 international galleries: A1043 (Paris, France), Deli Gallery (New York, USA), Friedman/Johnson (New York/Miami, USA), Galerie Mitterrand (Paris, France), Salon 94 Design (New York, USA), The Breeder (Athens, Greece), and Volume Gallery (Chicago, USA).
Built in 1728 as the Hôtel de Guise, this once opulent hotel particulier has been known under many names including Hôtel du président Chauvelin, Hôtel de Rougé, Hôtel de Mme de Lurcy and finally, L’Hôtel Chauvelin de Crisenoy. While its former grandeur eventually fell into romantic decay, it has more recently become inspiration for artists and curators alike who have breathed new life into its derelict shell. Zut! embraces the building’s storied past, and responds with different visions of how contemporary art and design can synergistically co-exist.
Installed in this modern ruin, each installation triggers the imagination witha sense of possibility, impermanence, and play.
For their presentation, The Breeder highlights selected artists in their program: Ekene Stanley Emecheta, Luke Edward Hall, Maria Hassabi,Philippe Malouin, Katlego Tlabela, Barry Yusufu and Lulama Wolf. The artists presented here work across various mediums ranging from painting to sculpture, video and performance and engage in a cross generational dialogue. Although each artist’s practice is compellingly diverse from the next, each one dismantles formal convention in pursuit of new connections, via their distinct interpretations of painting, collage, and assemblage.

The Breeder’s presentation in Zut!, is centered around the work of artist and designer Philippe Malouin whose solo exhibition Steel Works was hosted by the gallery last November. Philippe Malouin’s practice is located at the junction point between craftsmanship, sculpture and industrial design. In this new body of work, he explores the relationship of lighting, furniture and sculpture, threading the historical and the cultural through a modern lens. The works were produced in two parts in Brighton, UK and Athens, Greece and both their colors and construction are inspired by each city and its waste material that the artist discovered in scrap yards. Malouin creates here an interesting dialogue between materials, form and functionality and assembles these elements in a way that is both innovative and compelling, ensuring he captures all the possibilities the material has to offer.
